Statistics: Heart Disease & Stroke are the #1 cause of premature death in women in Canada – about 6X more than Breast Cancer. Since 1984, more women than men have died of cardiovascular disease, yet it is still under-recognized and under-treated. Men tend to develop heart disease around age 50-60 which is 7-10 years earlier than women do. 53% of women who experience heart attack symptoms have them go unrecognized.  2/3 of all Heart Disease and Stroke clinical research focuses on men. Heart Disease and Stroke kill 31,000 women in Canada annually but most women are unaware of this threat. In your Handout, you will see the traditional picture of the human heart. Anatomically male and female hearts look about the same. When healthy, both should be about the size of a fist. But, A man’s heart is the size of a man’s fist and a woman’s heart is smaller because it is about the size of a woman’s fist. Both men and women have 3 main coronary arteries surrounding their hearts.  These are the large blood vessels that wrap around the outside of the heart supplying blood, oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle to keep the heart pumping properly. Until recently, the medical community, and in particular, lay people, have believed that all hearts were equal and that the symptoms of heart disease and heart attacks were identical in men and in women.
